The Big Reveal: Tilly's Nursery

Planning and decorating Tilly's nursery was, by far, one of the most exciting steps in preparing for our baby girl.  I LOVED every step of the process--from picking the color scheme to adding the final decorative touches.  And I could not be happier with how it turned out!  Of course, there were a few stressful moments during those few weeks... I mean c'mon, this is ME we're talking about--Mrs. OCD-it's not finished until I say so-perfectionista... But, my amazing husband has learned how to deal with this adorable side of of my personality, and we survived those few little hiccups without too much pain! :)

Even before we knew that we were having a girl, we decided that we would paint the nursery walls a pale gray.  Then, depending on whether we were having a boy or a girl, we would add touches of color to accent.  Once we found out that were expecting a daughter, we easily decided to accent with pale pinks and white.  Of course, I scoured Pinterest for nursery and decor ideas, and found some amazing inspiration for our sweet girl's room.

So, without further delay...  Here is Tilly Brooke's nursery!

One of the toughest decisions we had to make was what kind of rocker to purchase for the nursery.  I'm not a huge fan of the wooden gliders, and voted for a big, cushion-y rocker.  But, have you seen the price tags on those things???  I just couldn't wrap my brain around spending that much money on a fabric covered piece of furniture that would surely get drenched in spit-up, vomit, and any other substance that our sweet girl might produce.  Then, my aunt came to the rescue and offered us this wooden rocker.  After much deliberation, we decided that giving this rocker a face-lift would be the most budget-friendly, practical choice.  And you all know that I love budget-friendly finds.  The rocker turned out beautifully, and I think it will serve its purpose well.

Another tough decision that we dealt with was the ceiling light fixture.  Originally, the room had a dark wood ceiling fan that completely clashed with the rest of the nursery decor, so we definitely had to change that.  We considered just switching the original fan out with a new white fan so that it would at least match the furniture, but I really wanted her to have a pretty, girly chandelier like one of these:

But again, these were $200+, and we just couldn't justify spending that kind of money on a light fixture.  So, I turned to Pinterest for some inspiration, found a tutorial from the SmartGirlStyle blog on how to make a faux capiz shell chandelier, and was able to create our own pretty, girly chandelier. Here is a photo of the chandelier from the tutorial blog:

We loved the look of this, and decided that this is the route we would go.  After a few hours spent with a laminating machine, a round paper punch, and a needle and thread, we had a beautiful fixture for the nursery.  Here are some photos of our finished chandelier:

I was thrilled with how it turned out.  I love the look of this versus the ceiling fan, and we only spent about $20 to make it.  Talk about a deal!!!

Here are a few close-up shots of some of the smaller details of the room:

their thumbprint and signed their name.

Framed cork board from my Aunt Christy.
She gave this to us before she passed away.
It works perfectly in the nursery.
I found this stickable quote at Hobby Lobby
in the sticker/scrapbooking section.
I painted a small canvas, added the sticker
and the fabric flowers, which I whipped up
from some fabric that I had on hand.
The quote says:  "Dear little one, we never dreamed you'd be so beautiful... in all of the times we tried to imagine every last detail of who you would be, thru all of the nights we spent quietly thinking of how we would feel when we first looked at you, we patiently waited and silently wondered.  We hoped and we prayed and we tried to imagine... but we never dreamed you'd be so beautiful."

We absolutely ADORE everything about the nursery, and couldn't be more thrilled that we were able to create such a beautiful room for our beautiful daughter.  And I loved the time that Tilton and I were able to spend together while working on it.  We spent so much time in the room together, talking about all the things we want for Tilly, and I will cherish those moments with him forever.

We cannot wait to meet our sweet girl, and are looking forward to the many hours that we will spend with her in this room.  So, c'mon Tilly Brooke!  We are anxiously awaiting your arrival!

Until next time...

Easy-Peasy Teacher Appreciation Gifts

My little bits just finished up her first year of preschool (PS1) last week, and just started her second year (PS2) this week.  Her first year at her school was nothing short of amazing, and I'm so happy with our decision to start her in the program last August.  Her teachers for PS1 were the best, so I wanted to give them a little something to show our appreciation and gratitude for all of the love, time, and patience they poured into our girl over the past 12 months.  I wanted to keep it simple, and give them something that they could appreciate and actually use, and eventually decided on a small succulent arrangement and a Starbucks gift card.  Because who isn't obsessed with succulents and coffee  right now always?!? I put the succulent arrangements together myself, and I love the way they turned out!  I picked up the white planters at Hobby Lobby for around $5 each.  The succulents came from Home Depot (their selection was HUGE) and ranged in...

Becoming a Runner: Week 4 Update

I now have 4 weeks of running under my belt, and I have to say that it feels amazing!   I made an improvement from my previous two weeks, and ran 4 days last week.   My goal was to run 5 days, and while I fell short of meeting that, I’m still so happy with my progress.   We were blessed with some AMAZING weather in Louisville last week, which definitely improved my mood and my motivation.   It was sunny and so much warmer, and running in 50 degrees is, without a doubt, easier than running in those freezing temperatures I ‘d been facing! Here’s what I did for Week 4 (January 11 – January 17): Day 22 (1.11.15): 2 mile jog <<Make up from Original Day 16, Supposed to do a 2 mile jog>> Day 23 (1.12.15): 1 mile jog, ¼ mile walk, 1 mile jog <<Make up from Day 17, Supposed to do a 1 mile jog, ¼ mile walk, 1 mile jog, ¼ mile walk, 1 mile jog>> Day 24 (1.13.15): Rest <<Supposed to do a 1 ½ mile jog, ¼ mile walk, 2 mile jog>> ...

Becoming a Runner: Week 3 Update

Week 3 of my 30-Day Running Challenge was similar to Week 2 in that it was not very exciting.   It’s been very cold here in Louisville—like, walk outside and you immediately freeze where you stand cold.   And because getting out of bed on time in the morning is a daily struggle for me, and I work 10+ hour shifts a day, my runs are limited to nighttime, when it’s blistering cold and all I want to do is crawl under a cozy blanket and cuddle with Tilton while watching our shows.   Needless to say, finding the motivation to run when I get home from work has been tough.   I’m doing my best to stick with it though.   During Week 3 (January 4 – January 10), I only ran 3 days again.   Bummer. Here’s what I did for Week 3: Day 15 (1.4.15): Rest (SICK) <<Supposed to be a rest day>> Day 16 (1.5.15): 2 ½ mile jog <<Make up from Original Day 12, Supposed to do 2 mile jog>> Day 17 (1.6.15): Rest <<Supposed to do a 1 mile jo...
