Life as Louisvillians...

Kyle and I finally made our move to Louisville last weekend. It was hectic.. busy.. stressful.. but still so much fun! We were lucky to have had most of our things packed away already, so we had time to paint the new place before we moved in… Well my dad and Kyle had time to paint the new place before we moved in! I helped a little, but I definitely have to give them all the credit! We decided to go with a neutral color throughout the entire condo.. And I’m glad we did. The color is a light gray and will allow us to use any colors that we want throughout our decorations! I love it!

On Saturday morning Kyle’s parents and my sister were in Lexington to help us load everything into the Uhaul. It didn’t take quite as much time as I thought that it would and the drive to Louisville went very smoothly. When we arrived in Louisville, my parents were waiting at the condo with a “Welcome Home” sign hung above our door! What a way to come home! They helped us unload the truck and begin the unpacking process.

Last Sunday, we decided to venture up north to every decorator junky’s dreamland…IKEA. Neither of us had ever been there before, but I had heard nothing but great things about their furniture and LOVE getting lost in their catalogs, so I was very excited for our trip. Unfortunately, our experience was not as wonderful as we’d hoped. We originally set out in search of a bed, a dresser, dining room table and chairs, and anything else that happened to catch my eye.. which was everything.. naturally. We found the bed we wanted… an off-white, iron bed which I love. We found a dresser that was perfect… big enough for the both of us to use, and a colorful blue! We also picked up some pale blue end tables, a rug for the kitchen, and some picture frames for the walls. As we headed back to Kentucky, we were sure we had hit the Ikea jackpot.

On Tuesday, Kyle, being the amazing, wonderful husband that he is, decided that he was going to put everything together while I was in class all day. He first decided to work on the bed.. It seemed easy enough... All you had to do was hook the headboard and footboard to the side rails, right? Well, that’s a little tough when there aren’t any side rails in the box. So putting our bed together… Epic fail #1. Although disappointed, Kyle decided to move on and tackle the dresser. The dresser came in two separate boxes, one marked with a #1 sticker, and the second marked with a #2 sticker. He opened the first box and removed all the parts. Everything seemed to be there and it was the blue color that we had selected…so far so good. He opened the second box. All the pieces seemed to be there… but there was one MAJOR problem. Everything was gray! Not the deep, colorful blue that we loved and drove four hours to get… but a pale gray that looked like it’s paint job was never finished. Putting our dresser together… Epic fail #2.

So there we had it… A headboard and a footboard that couldn’t be put together… and two halves of a dresser that didn’t match. You can imagine my disappointment in coming home Tuesday and not having a place to put all of the clothes that are currently smothering our bedroom floor and still sleeping on a mattress that is resting on the ground. Nevertheless, we aren’t giving up! We are heading back north this weekend for a little adventure I’m calling “The Newmans Visit Ikea: Take Two”.

Despite that little speed bump, I think our place is definitely coming together. We are making progress unpacking all of our stuff, but still have a lot to do. I had block exams at school this weekend, so I didn’t have a lot of free time last week to sift through and organize all of our belongings. We did get our living room curtains hung though, and I think they are perfect. They are a solid, pale green and help to brighten up our dark furniture. I love them! We haven’t hung any of our pictures yet, but I’m planning to do that this weekend too. And I have a few new crafty décor ideas I’m going to try out and hopefully they all turn out like I expect. I’ve decided that I’m obsessed with decorating, and Kyle says that if I ever decide to retire from pharmacy, interior decorating should be my fall-back career. I think I could live with that!

I will post pictures of the new place soon!

Until next time...

Easy-Peasy Teacher Appreciation Gifts

My little bits just finished up her first year of preschool (PS1) last week, and just started her second year (PS2) this week.  Her first year at her school was nothing short of amazing, and I'm so happy with our decision to start her in the program last August.  Her teachers for PS1 were the best, so I wanted to give them a little something to show our appreciation and gratitude for all of the love, time, and patience they poured into our girl over the past 12 months.  I wanted to keep it simple, and give them something that they could appreciate and actually use, and eventually decided on a small succulent arrangement and a Starbucks gift card.  Because who isn't obsessed with succulents and coffee  right now always?!? I put the succulent arrangements together myself, and I love the way they turned out!  I picked up the white planters at Hobby Lobby for around $5 each.  The succulents came from Home Depot (their selection was HUGE) and ranged in...

Becoming a Runner: Week 4 Update

I now have 4 weeks of running under my belt, and I have to say that it feels amazing!   I made an improvement from my previous two weeks, and ran 4 days last week.   My goal was to run 5 days, and while I fell short of meeting that, I’m still so happy with my progress.   We were blessed with some AMAZING weather in Louisville last week, which definitely improved my mood and my motivation.   It was sunny and so much warmer, and running in 50 degrees is, without a doubt, easier than running in those freezing temperatures I ‘d been facing! Here’s what I did for Week 4 (January 11 – January 17): Day 22 (1.11.15): 2 mile jog <<Make up from Original Day 16, Supposed to do a 2 mile jog>> Day 23 (1.12.15): 1 mile jog, ¼ mile walk, 1 mile jog <<Make up from Day 17, Supposed to do a 1 mile jog, ¼ mile walk, 1 mile jog, ¼ mile walk, 1 mile jog>> Day 24 (1.13.15): Rest <<Supposed to do a 1 ½ mile jog, ¼ mile walk, 2 mile jog>> ...

Becoming a Runner: Week 3 Update

Week 3 of my 30-Day Running Challenge was similar to Week 2 in that it was not very exciting.   It’s been very cold here in Louisville—like, walk outside and you immediately freeze where you stand cold.   And because getting out of bed on time in the morning is a daily struggle for me, and I work 10+ hour shifts a day, my runs are limited to nighttime, when it’s blistering cold and all I want to do is crawl under a cozy blanket and cuddle with Tilton while watching our shows.   Needless to say, finding the motivation to run when I get home from work has been tough.   I’m doing my best to stick with it though.   During Week 3 (January 4 – January 10), I only ran 3 days again.   Bummer. Here’s what I did for Week 3: Day 15 (1.4.15): Rest (SICK) <<Supposed to be a rest day>> Day 16 (1.5.15): 2 ½ mile jog <<Make up from Original Day 12, Supposed to do 2 mile jog>> Day 17 (1.6.15): Rest <<Supposed to do a 1 mile jo...
